Prep to Year 6 · Gold Coast, Brisbane, or online

When reading or writing has become a battle

For children who have lost confidence and pull away from books, writing and schoolwork. Our founder will get to know your child, conduct assessments to find what’s getting in the way, and map a weekly plan you can actually use at home.

In person on the Gold Coast or in Brisbane, or online anywhere in Australia.

Tell us a little about your child. We’ll ring you for a free call to talk it through, and explain the details and price on the call and by email. No spam and no pushy follow-ups.

Is this for my child?

This session is for children from Prep to Year 6 who:

  • are finding reading or writing harder than they should, or both
  • have lost confidence with books, even if they’re doing fine in other subjects
  • push back, go quiet or melt down when reading aloud, homework or writing comes up
  • aren’t moving forward, even though you’ve been trying at home

And for parents who want a clear picture of what’s actually stuck, not another list of general tips.

Letter cards and picture cards laid out for a reading activity

What happens in the session

  • One-on-one with Miss Hugo, 60–90 minutes.
  • Online anywhere in Australia, or in person on the Gold Coast or in Brisbane, at your home or a local library.
  • Need to change your time? Reschedule for free with at least 24 hours’ notice. A cancellation with less than 24 hours’ notice, or a no-show, forfeits the 50% deposit. See our refund policy.
  • What she looks at: letter names and sounds, phonics, hearing sounds in words (phonological awareness), sight words, fluency, comprehension, a short writing and spelling sample, and how your child approaches books and copes when the work gets hard.

Is this a diagnosis?

This is a literacy assessment by a specialist literacy teacher. It isn’t a medical, psychological or dyslexia diagnosis, and it isn’t speech pathology. The aim is to understand where your child is right now and what will help them move forward with less stress and more success.

What we look at

The session is built to find what may be causing the delay.

Reading skills

  • Letter names and sounds
  • Phonics: using sounds to read and spell words
  • Phonological awareness: hearing and working with the sounds in words
  • Sight words: words they should recognise straight away
  • Fluency: pace, accuracy, and how the reading sounds
  • Comprehension: whether they understand what they have read

Writing, and how they cope

  • A short writing sample, so a writing delay is not missed
  • Spelling in that writing, not only on a word list
  • Reading behaviour: what they do when a word is hard, and whether they stay with it
  • Confidence and resistance: how they respond when literacy gets difficult

What you get, and when

  1. The assessment session. 60–90 minutes, one-on-one with our founder.
  2. A detailed written report. It explains clearly what’s going on with your child’s reading and writing, in plain language you can actually use. It arrives 1–2 weeks after the session.
  3. Your weekly roadmap. A practical plan of what to practise now and what can wait, sent with the report (more below).
  4. Two 30-minute follow-up calls (phone or video) after the report, to check in, answer your questions and adjust the plan if needed.

All of this is one package, at one price. It’s explained on your free call and by email.

Want weekly lessons afterwards? Miss Hugo can put you in touch with tutors who’ll work from the plan.

What’s the weekly roadmap?

It’s a practical, week-by-week plan made just for your child, so you know what to practise now and what can wait. You can follow it at home yourself, or hand it to a tutor so they start with clear direction. Then the follow-up calls check how it’s going and adjust it.

How booking works

  1. Enquire. Fill in the short form with your child’s year level and whether you’d like the Gold Coast, Brisbane or online.
  2. A free call. Miss Hugo rings you to talk it through, answer your questions and explain the price. You’ll get the details by email too.
  3. Pay 50% to book. Half the package price confirms your session time. You can reschedule for free with at least 24 hours’ notice.
  4. The session. 60–90 minutes, one-on-one.
  5. Pay the remaining 50%. This is due after the session, before the report is sent.
  6. Your report and weekly roadmap. These arrive 1–2 weeks after the session.
  7. Two 30-minute follow-up calls (phone or video) to check how the plan is going and adjust it.

Questions parents ask

Where do sessions happen? Is there reading help on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane?

Yes. Sessions can be in person on the Gold Coast or in Brisbane, at your home or a local library, or online anywhere in Australia. Tell us which suits when you enquire.

Why isn’t the price on the page?

It’s one package price that covers the session, the report, the weekly roadmap and both follow-up calls. It’s explained properly on a free call. Enquire and we’ll ring you to talk it through, then email you the full details and the price, with no obligation.

How does payment work?

You pay 50% to book your session. The remaining 50% is due after the session, before the report is sent.

What if we need to change the session time?

You can reschedule for free with at least 24 hours’ notice. A cancellation with less than 24 hours’ notice, or a no-show, forfeits the 50% deposit. See the full refund policy.

How long until we get the report?

The written report and weekly roadmap arrive 1–2 weeks after the session.

How do the follow-up calls work?

You get two 30-minute follow-up calls, by phone or video, after the report. They’re a chance to check in, ask questions and adjust the plan if needed.

My child can’t read, or is struggling to read. Where do we start?

Start with a one-on-one session. Our founder looks at letters and sounds, phonics, sight words, fluency, comprehension, and how your child behaves when reading gets hard. You leave with a report and a weekly roadmap, not a guess.

Does it cover spelling and writing too?

Yes. The session includes a short writing sample, so spelling is checked in real writing, not only on a word list, and a writing delay isn’t missed.

Is this weekly lessons?

No. Our founder gives your child a thorough assessment to find out what’s getting in the way, then makes a clear plan for how they can improve. You can follow it at home yourself, or she can recommend tutors for the areas your child needs and plan the next steps with them.

Can you recommend a reading tutor?

Yes. If you’d like weekly lessons, our founder can put you in touch with tutors who’ll work from your child’s plan.

Can we do it online if we are not on the Gold Coast or in Brisbane?

Yes. Online sessions are available anywhere in Australia.

Do you diagnose dyslexia?

No. This is a literacy assessment by a teacher. It is not a medical or psychological diagnosis, and it is not a speech pathology assessment.
